To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILHELM ROBERT MUHLMANN, of Klingenthal, Saxony, Germany, have invented a new and Improved Accordion, (patented in Germany March 14, 1892, No. 66,481,) of which the following is a full, clear, and eXact description.

The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved accordion, which is simple and durable in construction, and arranged to give ready access to the melody reeds with out disturbing the bellows.

The invention consists of a handle made hollow and containing the melody reed board dividing the handle into two compartments of which one is connected with the key valves and the other with the interior of the bellows.

The invention also consists of certain parts and details, and combinations of the same, as will be hereinafter described and then pointed out in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a plan view of the improvement. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same on line 2-2 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a plan view of the improvement with parts broken away, and the cover of the handle removed.

On one side of the bellows A, is secured the handle 13, made hollow and containing the melody reed board 0, provided with the usual sets of melody reeds D. The reed board 0 divides the hollow handle into two compartments E and F, of which the compartment F is connected by apertures or slots G, with the interior of the bellows A. The other compartment F is divided by transverse partitions l'Linto single sound chambers Lone for each set of melody reeds. Each sound chamber I is provided on the side of the handle B with one or more valve openings J, adapted to be opened or closed by the valves K, supported on the usual key L. The side of the handle B next to the compartment E supports a cover N, which when removed gives ready access to the reeds and reed board 0. It will be seen that by this arrangement the handle B can be manufactured separately from the bellows A and attached thereto in a very short time, so as to make the necessary connection between the reeds and the interior of the bellows. It will further be seen that ready access is had at all times to the reeds in the reed board, the operator simply removing the cover N to get at the reeds, as before described.

In accordions, as heretofore constructed, the reed board and reeds are placed in the side of the bellows and form a part of the same; hence the bellows have to be disturbed whenever the operator desires to get at the reeds for repairing the same or for other purposes. As the bellows are very hard to keep air-tight and are liable to leak when once disturbed, it will be seen that the above improvement by which the bellows is not touched at all in repairing the reeds, completely avoids the above mentioned difficulty.

As shown in the drawings only an ordinary accordion is represented. It is, however, understood that an accordion with stops and other appliances can readily be manufactured with my improvement applied.

Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. An accordion provided with a hollow handle, containing the melody reed board and reeds and dividing the handle into two compartments, of which one is connected with the key valves and the other with the interior of the bellows, substantially as shown and described.

2. An accordion provided with a handle made hollow and adapted to be attached to one side of the bellows, a melody reed board held in the said hollow handle and containing the reeds, the said reed board dividing the hollow handle into two compartments, of which one is connected with the interior of the bellows, and key valves for opening and closing the apertures leading to the sounding chambers of the other compartment, substantially as shown and described.
