While Nonagon Infinity has a story it is not told as clearly as albums like Polygondwanaland due to the cyclical structure of album meaning that the listener can start it at any song which makes it difficult to tell a linear story.

But Nonagon Infinity ups the high-concept ante to absurd extremes. While pieced together from discretely recorded, separately titled songs, the record is mixed to feel like a continuous 41-minute live performance, complete with recurring musical and lyrical passages.

The band's name was created "last minute". Mackenzie wanted to name the band "Gizzard Gizzard" while another band member wanted Jim Morrison's nickname "Lizard King". They eventually compromised with King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard.
