  1. Good gawd, what a find! And what an obvious influence on his fellow German, Peter Max, who, in turn, gave the ’60s that pop-surreal look (embodied by the “Yellow Submarine,” which I’d always assumed, as a kid, that Peter Max had something to do with). As it turns out, Friedrich Schroeder-“Sonnenstern” (the last name was an alias, apparently) was active just a 20-minute walk from us, up the road, in the ’20s… not as an artist but “with occultism, divination and healing magnetism. He founded a sect and distributed its income in the form of bread rolls to poor children, earning him the title “Schrippenfürst of Schöneberg”. Sounds like my kind of guy (but I hope “schrippen” tasted better then than they do now).
