Dresden Codak Influence Map 2015!

So I decided to put together an updated influence map for my work! Here are the artists who are the biggest influence on my visual and storytelling style. Each image size is roughly proportionate to how much I draw from that particular person.  

  1. F.W. Murnau - One of the pioneers of German Expressionism. His adaptation of Faust is unbelievable.  
  2. Hiromu Arakawa - Best known for Fullmetal Alchemist, she’s an incredible cartoonist with a strong sense of pacing and scale.  
  3. Moebius - King Shit of Fuck Mountain.
  4. Fritz Lang - Director of Metropolis, innovator of both German Expressionism and Film Noir.  
  5. Masamune Shirow - Groundbreaking cartoonist in the field of design and kinetic action. Best known for Appleseed and Ghost in the Shell.  
  6. Tatsuyuki Tanaka - Animator and author of Cannabis Works. Master of grotesque, gripping scenery and environmental storytelling.  
  7. Hayao Miyazaki - Self explanatory. 
  8. François Schuiten - Artist behind The Obscure Cities series. Magnificent architecture.  
  9. Syd Mead - Futurist and concept designer for such films as Blade Runner.  
  10. Enrique Fernandez - Spanish artist behind marvelous books like L'île sans sourire and Brigada. He takes digital painting to a completely knew level.

  3. I wouldn’t call her a parody. Let’s just say Ayn Rand was a “significant inspiration” for Alisa Caspar, but she’s still her own character.

  5. Without venturing into spoiler territory, yes, that is how the world in Dark Science looks.

So guys, the Dresden Codak Kickstarter has been doing way, way better than I ever anticipated. We reached the original goal in less than an hour, and a couple days ago it became the 4th most funded comic Kickstarter ever.  It’s bonkers, people, utterly bonkers!

If you know how Kickstarter works, there are often stretch goals, but all the amazing Dresden Codak fans burned through the ones I planned in two days, so I’ve had to come up with new ones!  If you go to the site, you can see them all, but the big prize is this: if we hit $800k, I can update Dresden Codak biweekly for one year.


How does that work? Essentially, it will allow me to hire an assistant to handle all the non-drawing/writing parts of Dresden Codak (which is about 50% of my workload), and free me up to make more comics. Anyone who’s ever run their own business knows the innumerable small duties that can take away from the creative process, and seeing now that I have way more fans and supporters than I’d ever imagined, I want to up my game and deliver more of what people want.

Obviously I’ll do whatever I can to increase my content frequency regardless of the money, but the $800k benchmark is where I can officially make that promise and follow through.

Hey guys! For the first time, I’m looking to expand the Dresden Codak operation to such a degree that I can more regularly put comics out and update the site in general. This means hiring one or two people to help with all the backend (ie: non-comics making part) of Dresden Codak.

To that end, I’m going to be starting a Patreon soon! If you haven’t heard of it, it’s a funding platform that lets people pay an amount they choose for the content that artists create. Mine will be up in the next week or so, stay tuned!

Let me tell you about Fake Geek Guys.

Polling regularly shows that I have more female readers than male, so we can safely assume most men only pretend to like Dresden Codak for attention.  

It’s sad and pathetic, and usually pretty easy to spot.  I mean, aren’t we all a little sick and tired of Fake Geek Guys pretending to like Dresden Codak, when they’ve probably never even read Hob? Or even worse, haven’t memorized every line of Dungeons & Discourse?

Most men probably only started reading Dresden Codak recently, and a lot of them don’t even read the comic, just my Tumblr posts about comic theory, and they STILL call themselves fans!  I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been at a con and some man is dressed up as Tiny Carl Jung (obviously to pick up girls) and can’t even remember the character’s name.  We could do with a lot fewer men objectifying themselves just to get attention from the actual female fans.

Sure, some people say that in this female-dominated Dresden Codak fandom, we might be treating men unjustly, but all I’m saying is that it’s fine to be a guy and fan of my comic.  You just have to take a test to prove that you’re a real fan, just like every female reader already is.

I’m not being prejudiced, I’m just saying some people should be prejudged.
