Amy Adams tells Graham Norton how she cries on cue

Actors have all kinds of methods to help craft an emotional scene. Some rely on personal experience and memories. For Amy Adams, though, all it takes is a mention of sriracha.

During a visit to The Graham Norton Show Friday, Adams shared that her relationship with her 6-year-old daughter Aviana pushes her to show off her acting chops. While many might be starstruck by the Oscar nominee, the youngster is unfazed by her talented mother’s job. “I’m momma to her. She doesn’t think of me as an actress at all. She makes fun of me for it,” said Adams. “Like when I FaceTime her she’s like, ‘Oh my god, it’s Amy Adams!’”

The American Hustle and The Fighter actress may not have to prove to audience or Hollywood how good she is, but her her daughter, she explains, has her doubts. “We were talking about what I do for a living and I was trying to explain how I make believe, like she does when she plays, and she says, ‘Can you make yourself laugh?’ and I said, ‘Yeah.’” “‘Can you make yourself cry?’ and I said, ‘Yeah,’ and she goes, ‘Do it.’”

The Nocturnal Animals star shared that the pair came up with a special story to get her in the right emotional head space. “I don’t want to back into this Graham, okay?” said Adams, without skipping a beat. “This sriracha plant, they’re shutting it down because the fumes kind of go into the community.” As the tears begin to well up in her eyes, instantly Adams is able to snap out of her sadness and back into normalcy. “Everyone’s completely weirded out. They’re like, ‘I don’t trust her at all,’” she joked about previous reactions she’s gotten from doing the bit.

Apart from the hilarious performance, Adams shared the news that a sequel to Enchanted, appropriately titled Disenchanted, is in the works. Her two upcoming performances have received buzz-worthy attention: Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi drama Arrival hits theaters Nov. 11, and Tom Ford’s stylized thriller Nocturnal Animals arrives nationwide Dec. 9.
