Meet the Vendor
Ellen Berg, of True Blue Studios, curates not one but two fabulous booths at The Hill Antique Market. She offers art, art objects and antiques, and a variety of vintage and antique furniture. Ellen buys what she loves, and customers love what she buys!
The Hill Antique Market: Do you specialize in particular merchandise?
Berg: I buy and sell what I love, so customers at The Hill Antique Market will find all kinds of art and art objects—modern and antique—including furniture of almost any origin, in my two booths
THAM: How did you first develop an interest in antiques?
Berg: As a child, I visited often with all my aunts and cousins. My youngest aunt loved collecting and decorating, and took me along to browse antique shops all around St. Louis
THAM: How long have you been selling vintage and antique treasures?
Berg: I’ve collected, bought and sold treasures as I moved about the world over 40 years. During a 10-year period, I sold mostly to dealers at antique shows. Later, I operated an art gallery that showed contemporary artists as well as small collections of antiques and folk art.
THAM: Do you have a personal collection?
Berg: Yes. Some of my current collections are antique English, French and Biedermeier furniture; dog art and figurines of my favorite breeds; cookbooks; and living plants of all kinds
THAM: What do you enjoy most about being a vendor?
Berg: It’s a creative outlet.
THAM: What kinds of work and hobbies are you involved in?
Berg: I’ve cooked and gardened for a living. I’m an artist/craftsperson, currently renovating my studio in a tiny house. In the coming year, I plan to add my own work to my booths.
THAM: What’s your favorite feature of The Hill Antique Market?
Berg: It’s set in a wonderful renovated warehouse with Oliva (café and event space) adjacent. That makes it so much more, including a great place to meet up.
Along with collecting and selling vintage wares, Ellen Berg is a painter and a metalsmith, and is expanding into silver work. She works in mixed media on paper and encaustic paints on board and has also worked in copper and brass, making small objects and jewelry.
