Österreichische Nationalbibliothek - Lesesäle am Heldenplatz

Die Gewohnheit die Nationalbibliothek als Lese- und Lernort zu nützen hat sich bei mir erst letztes Semester entwickelt. Normalerweise lerne ich zu Hause. Das ist allerdings, wie sicher viele aus eigener Erfahrung kennen, mit einigen Hindernissen verbunden. Da gibt es dann plötzlich so viele Arbeiten, die schnell noch erledigt gehören, kochen, zusammenräumen, schnell noch einen Kaffee trinken, Mails checken, kurz mit den Mitbewohnern plaudern und der Tag ist schon wieder halb vorbei. Der Lesesaal der Hauptuni hat mich auch nie so recht begeistert. Viel zu viele Menschen, die es dort zu beobachten gibt und damit verbunden viel zu viele Ablenkungen oder Ausreden, um nicht wirklich lernen zu müssen.
Ich kam dann letztes Semester in die Nationalbibliothek, um ein paar Bücher einzusehen. Da mir das Kopieren dann doch etwas zu mühselig war, nützte ich gleich den großen Lesesaal. Siehe da, ich konnte mich konzentrieren. Keine großen Ablenkungen, man konnte nichts anderes als lesen. Die produktive Stimmung rings um mich hat mich sogar motiviert. In diesen zwei Stunden habe ich mehr weitergebracht als sonst an einem Tag. Das hat mich überrascht und natürlich im Nachhinein gefreut.
Darum komme ich wieder. Darum und weil ich eine natürlich gleich eine Jahreskarte gekauft habe. Außerdem finde ich die Lesesäle wirklich super, sie sind relativ modern eingerichtet, man hat genug Licht und im Winter und Frühjahr ist es hier um einiges wärmer als in meiner Wohnung. Steckdosen für den Laptop, eigenes Licht und W-LAN ist sowieso auch dabei.
Für eine Pause gibt's dann noch so eine Art Café in der Nationalbibliothek. Sehr praktisch, wie ich finde, denn man darf ja drinnen nichts essen und trinken. Kaffeeautomaten, Getränkeautomaten, Automaten mit kleinen Snacks stillen den größten Durst und Hunger, dazu gemütliche Sesseln, Blick in den Burggarten und eine Zeitung. Sofern man dann überhaupt noch lesen will.
Am Ende noch ein Tipp: eher früh oder am späten Nachmittag kommen, um noch einen Platz zu bekommen.

My wife is a big fan of libraries so we visit a lot of them when we travel. I must admit I like them also. I particularly like the beautiful collections of old books. This library is certainly worth a visit. It is very beautiful and peaceful. Other than looking at the impressive collection of beautifully bound books, marble pillars and other lush architectural features there is not too much to see. However, it is very peaceful.

I accidentally entered the building thinking its a museum but so glad I did as the entrance and structure is beautiful!!

Its a good place to study. This is a review for the studying area, not the tourist area (prices are also different).

I think annual pass is 10 Euros, otherwise for a day, its 1.50. You must have ID with you to get the annual pass the first time (form filling).

its super, super quiet. Deafeningly so. So bring your music and headphones if you need some noise. Lots of outlets for computers, right on the table in front of you, lots of windows so lots of light. Wireless works well, free. Sometimes above you fresh vapor (scented I think) turns on for a few seconds; no wetness on your paper, great.

Not excited that you can't take any bags in, so you have to unload it, put the rest of your stuff in lockers (bring a 2 Euro coin with you, and you get it back at the end). If you have a clear, see through bag, then you can bring it with you, which is great so you're not pretending to be a circus act balancing all of your stuff as you walk from the lockers to a desk, which includes going up and down stairs.

The down side: no food or drink except downstairs by the snack machines (not much space to sit there either). Annoying if you don't have a bag to pack your stuff with. Also, I'm pretty sure that during the school year, it might be very hard to get a place to sit a little later in the day.

Disappointing. I am not sure what was imperial about this place other than the Habsburgs were here. You can see more impressive library at a mediocre university campus.

The best place to study in Vienna. Spacious reading halls accompanied by a comfortable lounge area and a speedy internet connection make this library ideal for working on university projects.

The historic section of the National Library is amazing. Well worth a visit to see the stunning book room, and they usually have a small exhibit that is worth a moment of your time.
