On isolated moorland just a few hundred metres outside the Northumberland National Park boundary near Elsdon, a lone wooden post stands testament to a gruesome story. Winter’s Gibbet – or Steng Cross – is the gallows where William Winter and two female accomplices were hanged in 1792 following their convictions for the murder of a local woman. Winter’s corpse has long since rotted away, and the gibbet is a replica, but visit alone on a windswept day when the pole and chains are groaning in the wind and it’s all too easy for your imagination to fill in the blanks.

Yes, if your horse doesn't shy near the gibbet…. it's maybe quite well known, that children, and animals, in particular, have esp, and can sense the supernatural, the way some adults can…. spooky!!! Absolutely fascinating history…. and absolutely gorgeous place….!!!! Will definitely pop down on the bus/train, from Edinburgh, someday….!!!! Fantastic….!!!! Xxxx
