Can You Run Crysis In VR? You Can, Thanks To A New Mod

Francesco De Meo
Crysis

The original Crysis, released by Crytek back in 2008, had such ridiculously high system requirements that it has become a meme. Nowadays, every modern PC can run the game well, and from today, those with a VR headset will also be able to experience the game in VR.

The new mod, which has been developed by modder Cabalistic, the same modder behind the Half-Life 2 VR mod, is now available for download from GitHub. As it is still in its early alpha version, the mod is far from being perfect, as it doesn't support roomscale or motion controls. It does have working stereoscopic rendering with 6DOF headset tracking, so the game is still fully playable in VR even at this stage. The mod also allows quick switching to 2D mod, which the modder recommends doing for cutscenes, as they take over the came.

Ironically, even though most modern systems can run the original Crysis well, they may have trouble running it in VR mode. While reducing resolution and in-game quality settings can improve the situation, some scenes will still have trouble running well even on current high-end hardware, so it definitely sounds like the VR mod will breathe new life into the "Can You Run Crysis" meme.

For a long time, the Crysis series seemed to be done, as the only new releases in a long time were remastered versions of the first three entries in the franchise. Last year, however, it was confirmed that the series is far from being over, as a fourth main entry is currently in the works. However, very little is currently known about this new game, other than the fact that its development is being headed by Hitman 3 Director Mattias Engström, as it was still in early development as of January 2022. Crytek did confirm that the developer will be listening to the community, so it will be very interesting to see how the franchise will evolve with this new game and if the community will indeed help shaping the next chapter in the popular series.
