Un mittelbare freundschaft schliessen wollte, sowie dem geschichtlich arbeitenden juristen, mediziner und naturforscher ein handliches und doch umfassendes hilfsmittel, das ihm den reichen hochdeutschen wortschatz vom ende des I 5. Bis etwa zur mitte des 17. Jahrhunderts zuverl ssig erschlossen hatte. Erlauterte ausgaben reichen nicht berall hin, und im haushalt der wissen schaft mindestens ist es wenig ratsam, die gleichen w rter bei vielf ltigem vorkommen immer von neuem zu erkl ren. Das Grimmsche w rterbuch, das schweizerische idiotikon, Hermann Fischers schw bisches w rterbuch sind noch nicht fertig, das w rterbuch zu Luthers deutschen schriften von Philipp Dietz wird nie vollendet werden, Charles Schmidt beschr nkt sich auf elsassische texte, mit den grossen vorz gen von Schmellers bairischem w rterbuch kommt der fernerstehende und der anf nger erfahrungsgem ss nicht leicht auf vertrauten fuss, und so blieb in der sonst so vollst ndigen reihe der hilfsmittel auf unserem gebiet eine schwer begreifliche l cke. Sie zu schliessen, ist die aufgabe dieses glossars, und wenn man dessen durchweg freundlich aufgenommener ersten auflage zugestanden hat, dass sie die w rter burg jener zeit im handstreich genommen habe, so gilt es nun, sie in ge ordnetem aufmarsch zu verteidigen. Freilich: die aufgabe vollkommen zu l sen, geht auch jetzt noch ber die kraft des einzelnen. Niemand kann auch nur die wichtigsten schriftsteller der deutschen reformation aus eigener lektiire lexikalisch ersch pfen, ja schon die eben genannten hilfsmittel l cken los auszunutzen, bersteigt die kraft eines einzelnen. So muss, was hier auf beschr nktem raum geboten werden kann, unfertig bleiben in mehr als einem sinn, ein schl ssel, der viele t ren ffnet, aber nicht alle in dem bergrossen haus mit seinen vielen vexierschlossern, der erst in der arbeit vieler jahre ein rechter hauptschl ssel werden kann.
