Mit dem Kleinen Mittelhochdeutschen Wörterbuch liegt zum erstenmal seit dem Erscheinen von Matthias Lexers Taschenwörterbuch im Jahre 1879 ein neues Nachschlagewerk für mittelhochdeutsche Texte vor. Es ist als Hilfsmittel für alle konzipiert, die mittelhochdeutsche Texte lesen und verstehen wollen - in erster Linie für Studierende der Älteren Germanistik, aber auch für Wissenschaftler, die einen ersten schnellen Zugriff auf die Bedeutung eines mittelhochdeutschen Wortes suchen. Da das Wörterbuch Informationen über einen epochen- und gattungsübergreifenden Wortschatz erschließen soll, sind Texte aus dem Zeitraum 1070-1450 berücksichtigt. Der dargestellte Wortschatz wird eingegrenzt auf Texte, die für den akademischen Unterricht relevant sind. Eine Korpus-Bibliographie macht das Auswahlprinzip transparent. Dem Benutzerzweck entsprechend ist das neue Wörterbuch als Bedeutungswörterbuch angelegt, das auf Umschreibungen verzichtet. Die neuhochdeutschen Synonyme basieren auf einer Überprüfung aller Belege im Kontext der Quellengrundlage. Sie ermöglichen das Verständnis jeder im Korpus belegten Textstelle und sind in einer wörtlichen Übersetzung verwendbar, ohne einer individuellen Interpretation vorzugreifen. Als Hilfsmittel zur Rezeption von Texten stellt das Wörterbuch Lautstand, Genus, Flexion und Syntax nicht nach normativen Kriterien, sondern grundsätzlich deskriptiv den Textbelegen folgend dar. Angaben zur Valenz der Verben ermöglichen eine leichtere Zuordnung des mittelhochdeutschen Worts zu seiner neuhochdeutschen Entsprechung.
