To safely deliver a replacement power plant for AES, Kiewit instituted site-specific safety programs that focused on craftworker engagement. A craft-only safety committee interacted on a daily and weekly basis with management and peers to address project safety. Project supervisors, craft employees and subcontractors were responsible for submitting observations to the safety department. Results were reviewed by the safety team, the project manager and the safety manager to identify trending data. Building on that observation program, Kiewit started a new safety initiative on the Huntington Beach project called the conversation card program. The program aims to make safety more personal by asking two or more workers to fill out a card together, identifying risks and mitigating hazards. The team completed more than 1.8 million work hours with no lost-time incidents.
