Very rare and beautiful 19th century French Saint Wilgefortis rosary

{ca 1880}

Hand carved wood 'melon' beads presented in five complete decades. The center medal and chains are made of steel.

The crucifix features Jesus crucified on the front and St. Wilgefortis crucified on the verso - the story of her life was quite unusual. It is even more unusual to find these rare crucifixes!

Measurements:
Lying flat: 14 1/2"
Crucifix: just over 3/4"

Light wear, dustings of rust. There is a repair done in antiquity along the chain before the third decade.

Second Class relics are items that the saint owned or frequently used, for example, a crucifix, rosary, book, etc.

A Third Class relic is any object that has been in contact with a First or Second Class relic. Most commonly a rosary, medal, crucifix, or a piece of cloth.

When you incorporate a relic into prayer, for example praying a third class rosary, you are also praying for the intercession of all the Saints that have been touched to that sacramental.

We have been dealing in antique jewelry and religious artifacts for over 20 years. All of that experience and countless hours of research go into dating each piece. If we are not 100% certain of something it does not get listed. We have thousands of pieces that have yet to be listed due to this reason.
