A federal judge has barred the public and media from a courtroom where defense lawyers say emotional testimony from victims has spoiled the death penalty trial of a man who admits killing eight people on a bike path on behalf of a terrorist group.
4 men convicted in 1993 WTC bombing have had sentences cut
In the last year, four men implicated in the 1993 bombing have won reductions to their sentences after one part of their convictions was dropped to be consistent with a recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling. Nidal Ayyad, 53, Mohammad A. Salameh, 53, and Mahmud Abouhalima, 61, could be freed if they each live to be 100. AdThe bombers who had their sentences reduced were arrested in the intense FBI probe that followed the blast. In a 2012 memorandum, Duffy called Yousef โa cold-blooded killer, completely devoid of conscience.โAdIn a second trial, he was convicted as the mastermind of the 1993 bombing. Eyad Ismoil, 49, also convicted in the 1993 attack, is serving a 210-year sentence.
Remembering 9/11: Naval Station Mayport honors fallen
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. โ Naval Station Mayport held a remembrance ceremony Friday to honor the fallen and those who responded to the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. Friday marks 19 years since more than 3,000 people were killed when hijacked planes crashed into the World Trade Center, at the Pentagon and into a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. The ceremony started with a prayer and address, followed by the raising of a flag and four prolonged blasts at 8:46, 9:03, 9:37 and 10:03 a.m. The blasts are in observation of the four separate crashes that took place on that day. While commemoration ceremonies looked drastically different due to the pandemic this year, itโs a day and time in our nationโs history that will never be forgotten.
Local services remember those who were lost on 9/11
MAYPORT, Fla. โ On September 11th, 2001, nearly 3,000 died in the September 11th terrorist attacks. Many around the nation will honor those who lost their lives when two hijacked planes crashed into the World Trade Center, at the Pentagon, and near Shanksville 19 years ago, today. Study links World Trade Center firefighters and cardiovascular disease
One recent study indicates responding firefighters have an increased risk of developing cardiovascular disease. Researchers studied 9,796 male New York City firefighters who responded to the World Trade Center attack. Firefighters were followed for 16 years to see if they developed cardiovascular disease. "Knowing what we know about the acute exposure to compounds and dust, that may cause some degree of inflammation, chronic inflammation as well," he said. "And we know inflammation plays a major role in the genesis of cardiovascular disease."

Study: 9/11 attack tied to cardiovascular risk in firefighters
It found only an association between World Trade Center exposure and long-term cardiovascular risk, but more research is needed to determine whether a causal relationship exists. The new study joins several others that have found an association between firefighters responding to the World Trade Center disaster and elevated health risks. "One is that air pollution has long been known to be a major cardiovascular risk factor. "The good news is there are steps that people can take to prevent and reduce cardiovascular risk going forward, even if they've had substantially heightened risk," Trasande said. "Healthy diet and physical activity are still important counter weapons in the fight against cardiovascular disease," he said.
