Biography: James Patterson is an American author and philanthropist known for his prolific output of popular commercial fiction. He has written countless best-selling books, many of which have become top sellers in the crime, thriller, and young adult genres.

Patterson was born in New York, and began his career in advertising after graduating from Manhattan College and Vanderbilt University. He published his first novel, The Thomas Berryman Number, in 1976. The book won the Edgar Allan Poe Award for best first novel.

He gained widespread fame for his series featuring Alex Cross, a forensic psychologist formerly of the FBI and Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Police Department. Along Came a Spider, the first book in the Alex Cross series, was published in 1993 and set the tone for the series of novels.

Patterson's work is characterized by its narrative momentum, accessible writing style, and frequent plot twists. He often collaborates with co-authors and has been praised for his ability to create engaging, page-turning novels. His other well-known series include the Women's Murder Club, Michael Bennett, Maximum Ride, Daniel X, and Witch and Wizard, many of which have also been adapted into films or television series.

As well as his adult fiction, Patterson has written numerous books for young readers and has been an advocate for children's literacy. He has also been involved in various philanthropic endeavors related to education and literacy, including donations to universities, school libraries, independent bookstores, and scholarship programs.

Patterson holds The New York Times record for the most #1 New York Times bestsellers by a single author, a total that is well into the hundreds, and his books have sold millions of copies worldwide. He was also the first person to sell more than one million e-books.
