[Dubuffet, Jean. (1901-1985)] Müller, Heinrich Anton. (1869-1930)

1949 Postcard Invitation to Art Brut Exhibition

An original postcard of Swiss painter Heinrich Anton Müller's surreal drawing Le Pere Darou, with a printed inscription on the verso inviting the recipient to the 1949 exhibition of Art Brut: "qui se tiendra à la galerie René Drouin... à partir du mardi 11 octobre 1949." The inscription is printed in a facsimile of the handwriting of Jean Dubuffet, and the postcard is addressed in another hand and postmarked October 7, 1949. In fine condition. 5.5 x 3.5 inches (14.1 x 9.3 cm).

The influential French artist Jean Dubuffet embraced the so-called "Art Brut" ("Raw Art" or "Low Art") and eschewed traditional standards of beauty in favor of what he believed to be a more authentic and humanistic approach to image-making. The historic exhibition for which this card is an invitation brought together 200 works of 63 artists from the recently founded Compagnie de l'Art Brut. Today, the collection he founded is housed in Lausanne, Switzerland and contains thousands of works.

Heinrich Anton Müller's striking artworks, created during his 25 years in a mental hospital, were discovered after his death by Dubuffet and first shown in the 1949 exhibition. (13582)
