Metronidazole vaginal gel is used for the treatment of bacterial vaginosis, a condition characterized by a thin gray-white discharge with a fishy-smelling odor. Alcohol consumption must be avoided during treatment and for 72 hours after to prevent strong adverse reactions, including severe vomiting, headache, and flushing.

Used to treat symptomatic bacterial vaginosis with less systemic side effects than oral tablets

Taken as 1 applicatorful inserted vaginally at bedtime for 5 days

May also be used for suppressive therapy in patients with multiple recurrences as 1 applicatorful intravaginally at bedtime twice a week for 3 to 6 months

Must avoid use with vaginal products (e.g., tampons, douches) and do not have vaginal intercourse for the duration of treatment

Am 18 years or older
Have not had a hypersensitivity reaction to metronidazole, parabens, nitroimidazole derivatives (e.g. tinidazole), or any component of its formulation
Will not use or consume products with alcohol or propylene glycol during treatment or up to 72 hours of discontinuing treatment
Am using this as indicated for bacterial vaginosis for the treatment duration of 5 days
Am not breastfeeding
Have not taken disulfiram in the past 2 weeks
Understand this product is for vaginal use only, avoiding contact with eyes and mouth
Understand that prolonged use should be avoided due to risk of fungal or bacterial superinfection and carcinogenic potential
Do not have a history of liver (hepatic) impairment
Do not have a history of blood dyscrasias
Do not have a history of seizure disorder
Will discontinue use if numbness or tingling develops in the hands or feet, other abnormal neurologic signs develop, or if severe irritation, burning or numbness at the site of application
