Metronidazole vaginal gel is used for the treatment of bacterial vaginosis, a condition characterized by a thin gray-white discharge with a fishy-smelling odor. Alcohol consumption must be avoided during treatment and for 72 hours after to prevent strong adverse reactions, including severe vomiting, headache, and flushing.

  • Used to treat symptomatic bacterial vaginosis with less systemic side effects than oral tablets
  • Taken as 1 applicatorful inserted vaginally at bedtime for 5 days
  • May also be used for suppressive therapy in patients with multiple recurrences as 1 applicatorful intravaginally at bedtime twice a week for 3 to 6 months
  • Must avoid use with vaginal products (e.g., tampons, douches) and do not have vaginal intercourse for the duration of treatment
