One of the first people to arrive on the Met Gala red carpet tonight was Annie Leibovitz. The legendary photographer stepped out right after Blake Lively, whose “gilded glamour” gown boasted its very own reveal moment. But Leibovitz’s white suit, even without any baroque details, was just as much of a head-turner. The set was artfully oversized: a button-up that hit the top of the thighs, a suit jacket that extended ever-so-perfectly below the hips, and baggy trousers that had a razor-sharp pleat with the most perfected break. (On her feet, meanwhile, were a simple pair of black slippers.)

Leibovitz’s easy-going outfit fits into the current trend of the “coastal grandmother” aesthetic, which first began bubbling under on TikTok before becoming this year’s most aspirational style trend. It’s the kind of look a well-read heroine plucked out of a Nancy Meyers film would wear; an ensemble that a beach-loving Diane Keaton character could only wish to achieve. When I first saw this look, I imagined it as the sort of outfit that the designers of The Row dream about when they put their heads on their soft pillows each night. (Perhaps this is even what Eileen Fisher has on her moodboard!) Crisp, cream-colored, and effortlessly wholesome, the “coastal grandmother” vibe is the stuff your chicest dreams are made of—and tonight, Leibovitz pulled it off with aplomb.
