The AES Huntington Beach Generating Station (HBGS) became operational in 1958. It presently consists of 4 steam-powered electric generating units. Steam is supplied to each turbine generator from oil- and gas-fired boilers. The total power generating capacity is 880 MW. The power plant relies on intake of ocean water for cooling. It is situated right by Pacific Ocean next to Huntington State Beach popular with local residents and tourists. The power plant has been a subject of environmental studies and monitoring.
